I've had that thought about OPM Season 2 for the past week, like why would anyone in their right mind give the rights away to one of the most popular and mainstream anime of all time. Like here in the west all these movie companies are fighting over the rights to all the superheroes, Sony, Marvel, Fox, WB, etc. And due to this, we don't get to see some of the characters on screen together (X Men in MCU). So you would think it would be the same, Madhouse had the rights so no way in hell they would let go of this free money, but they did. And if I remember correctly it was because they had other projects, *what other project would be more profitable than ONE PUNCH MAN* . All in all, I agree, Anime marketing is weird, and their business decisions even weirder. I know this sounded ranty but it's just my speculation, so if anyone actually knows about marketing pls inform me.

The bit about blue exorcist is a real revelation. I loved the first 15 episodes and I remember feeling super confused when the plot went off the rails super quickly, and was even more confused when I saw the manga still updating on VIZ.
Don't forget Drifters, it was by the same creators of Hellsing, and it was sooo good and they also teased a season 2. But nope, and season 1 was 2016....
I remember when I read a Pokemon manga. Completely different from the anime, it was so fucking good.
Blue Exorcist is something I went in with no expectations and came out more than satisfied. The song themes, the plot (it was so surprisingly compelling), the characters. Loved them all.

on the topic of Pokemon, you should have mentioned Pokemon: Origins. It follows the story of Red much like the video game and it's 110% better than the regular Pokemon anime

5:01 if i remember correctly and correct me if im wrong please but i think no game no life the novel had gotten a copyright claim and while i think it was proven false the company still didnt wanna touch it due to that the reason the movie came out was cause they had already announced it so they didnt want to talk it back so thats why i just suggest to go get the light novels and read it yourself as there probably wont be a season two no matter how much we wish for it

TBH I liked OPM season 2. While the animation wasn't as good as season 1, season 2 did a good job of focusing on its characters.

Why do people think those hiatuses have anything to do with marketing?
So I have a theory they want a show to be popular enough to spark an interest but not good enough to be better than the Manga. That way consumers will be investing on both ends even though one product out shines the other in terms of quality. The temptation of seeing it play out in motion is just too great. It's a problem that has lasted forever and won't change cause fans can't abandon their love for a series over making a statement that quality has to meet a certain level to gain support.

Simple answer coming from a Japanese person: This method is the ironically effective method for Japanese companies to make money. Seems counter intuitive I know but look it up. They have many reasons as to why they can't simply copy the west style approach. Legal reasons such as licensing and piracy also take a huge effect.
I was talking to my friend about Promised Neverland, I tell him about what's going on in season 2 and he's like "wait did they do this whole arc in one episode or something?" and I'm just like "what arc? Nah this is just after they escaped". How do you skip an arc of a super popular manga adaptation, when there's no reason to at all? The manga is over, you don't need to rush things. No idea why they'd do that.

I know in some cases its the author's fault, they want 1 or 2 seasons but that's it just to raise sales for their manga or light novel, then they refuse to do more than that, heck there's 1 series where the author refuses to do any anime adaptation period. I know there's a few anime i'd love to see the series finish in the anime, mostly romances and rom coms I think suffer from being cut in the middle of the story like Nisekoi, Spice and Wolf, Monster Musume, I hope to see a season 2 of Interspecies Reviewers it was hilarious. Series where even if I know the ending due to spoilers, I'd still love to see it play out, but I don't read much anymore and can't afford manga or light novels. Maybe those series also were cut off from anime adaptations, I don't know, but I'd definitely love to see more, and usually with western shows fans are told it's ending or being canceled early, anime they don't really do that.
Yeah I've been saying this for years, same with blue exorcist happened to Full Metal Alchemist, unfortunately FMA did make its comeback in Brotherhood, Blue Exorcist though I felt disappointed with the sequel, it felt boring, slow, everyone hated him despite the original anime having a couple people on Rin's side, not even his crush who's all sunshine and lolipops even she was afraid of him, and maybe that is what happens in the manga, but then it must have been told poorly in the 2nd season, I don't know something just felt off about it.
